Okay, we are officially one week into the New Year… How are everyone’s resolutions going? I am going to be honest, I have had a slow start. I blame the whole “holiday hangover” I talked about the other day. It’s tough to get back into a routine after the holidays, especially when you are implementing new goals and habits. Today I started one I am really excited about, drinking 90 oz of water a day! So far I am peeing a ton and feeling full haha, but only 36 more ounces to go today!

If you want to read my other New Year’s resolutions and goals, you can see that post here. However, today I want to talk about how to actually stick to your goals and make them work. Most people don’t even make it to February by the time they give up. I think succeeding in your resolutions is totally doable with these tips!

Tips to Sticking to Your Resolutions:

1. Don’t Start Them all at Once

I am totally guilty of making a long list of resolutions at the beginning of the year and trying to implement them all at once. All of a sudden I am eating healthier, trying to workout more, saying yes to everything, reading more, trying to go to bed earlier, etc. I end up so overwhelmed that I give up on most of them. Start the year by focusing on one goal or habit, then make a timeline to add more in. Right now I am really focusing on my water intake and figuring out a healthy food plan before I start working out hardcore again. It takes 21 days to build a habit, so start with that!

2. Make Your Goals Measurable

I like being able to check something measurable off my list. Instead of saying “workout more” or “drink more water,” try to make it measurable! “Workout three times a week,” or “drink 64 oz of water a day.” This tips even works with personal goals! Such as, “Grow my business by  10% this month.” Just make sure you make the goal detailed so you know how you are going to accomplish it.

3. Change the Wording

One goal I am always so bad at keeping is working out more. This year I decided to change the wording when it comes to some of my resolutions. Instead of “working out more” I want to “learn to love working out.” This way I can spend my time trying new workout classes and learning to enjoy my resolution, rather than just trying to stick to it.

4. Be Gradual

This is sort of like tip number one, but with this tip I am talking about each specific goal. If your goal is to workout more, than start with twice a week and gradually do more. If you throw yourself into a goal full speed you are more likely to give up.

5. Reflect on What’s Working

Be realistic with yourself, if you set a goal for yourself every year and “fail” (such as saving more money, eating healthy, etc.), figure out what is going wrong. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Change up your way of doing things and see what works and what doesn’t. It’s okay to do a little trial and error!

6. Don’t Do it Alone

Find someone that has the same (or similar) goals as you and keep each other accountable! I am really lucky to have supportive friends and family who help keep me on track. Surround yourself with people who want to see you grow and that will push you!

7. Make Sure Some of Your Goals are Fun

Let’s be honest, most of our goals aren’t what I would call “fun.” However, it doesn’t have to be that way! Make a goal of having date night once a week or trying a new recipe! Make sure your goals set you up for a well rounded life!
